And just like that, summer fades into fall, the kids return to school, the holidays are over, and bang—everyone is suddenly thinking about hibernation. Hibernation can only mean one thing. Winter is approaching. And what springs to mind when you think of winter? Christmas!!! Yes, it gets earlier every year! Yes, you’ve no doubt seen the shops starting to stock-pile the Roses and Quality Streets, the slow but sure arrival of the tinsel, and the Instagram pop-ups to book your Christmas party. You can either fight it or succumb to the fast-approaching pleasure fest. We believe in the latter!
Personally, we love Christmas. Everyone is always in great form! We love welcoming back some of our regular guests who come every year for their Christmas shopping trips and get-togethers. And, with our brand new Greenes Restaurant overlooking the city’s only waterfall offering festive dishes combined with one of Ireland’s top cocktail bars- Cask providing some classic winter warmers, it’s easy to see why a get-away to the Rebel City should be at the top of everyone’s Christmas wish-list. Allow us to give you an tiny sample of what awaits you:
Christmas Shopping:
Is it ever too early to start thinking about Christmas shopping? We would argue that the earlier the better when it comes to putting some thought into finding that extra special gift for someone. Whether you’re going all out or just seeking a simple Secret Santa gift for that co-worker you don’t really know- you can rest assured that Cork City has you covered for all your Christmas gifting needs. From the luxury of Brown Thomas to some of the most popular high street brands to a unique selection of independent stores, kick start the Christmas season in confidence, knowing that our boutique hotel is just a 5 minute stroll from the centre should you wish to rest your legs.
Christmas Ferris Wheel:
After a busy day’s shopping, surge to new heights on the iconic Cork Christmas Ferris Wheel. Standing majestically at Grand Parade, the 32-meter panoramic wheel is impossible to miss and offers stunning views of our city and beyond.
Christmas Pantomimes:
Panto season is once again upon us and visitors will be spoiled for choice with no less than three pantos to choose from. Right across the road from Hotel Isaacs, Red Riding Hood will be gracing the boards of the Everyman Palace Theatre, a 128-year-old Victorian Theatre. Across the river, less than ten minutes away, Cinderella will be getting ready for the ball at the Cork Opera House. Watch out too for the Improvised Panto. Strictly for adults, expect all things naughty and nice. Just make sure you end up on the right side of Santa’s list!
Christmas Concerts:
Cork is a music-mad city and at Christmas, the city is awash with musical concerts, galas, cabarets and choirs. From impromptu busking sessions to choirs a carolling along with some festive favourites, there is always something to look forward to. Our particular favourites are the Lord Mayor’s Gala Christmas Concert, the Cantate Choir at Saint Peter’s and the Christmas Jingle at the Crane Lane Theatre.
Christmas Markets at the Marina Market:
Watch Cork’s largest indoor market transform itself into a Winter Wonderland with Christmas craft markets, world cuisine and even a chance to visit Santa and his elves at the South Pole Post Office as well as a trip aboard the Polar Express. Keep an eye on their events calendar for a selection of Christmas themed events in the lead-up to the big day including a pop-up cinema.
Ice Skating:
The temperatures starting to drop need not be a bad thing! Wrap up warm and head to the new Cork City on Ice rink for the ultimate Christmas skating experience. Conveniently located at the Marina Market, combine an outing with a refreshing walk down the Marina with possibly a trip to the stars at the Blackrock Castle Observatory.
Christmas movies:
Relive some Christmas classics at the Triskel Arts Centre cinema. Possibly one of the city’s best kept secrets, this former church is packed with history and is a truly atmospheric way to spend an evening. Alternatively, did you know, our Superior rooms have Netflix?
Nano Nagle Place:
Considered one of the most Christmasy places in the city, a visit to Nano Place Place and its interactive museum exploring the story of the Lady of the Lamp who founded the Presentation Sisters Schools Network is always worth a visit but at Christmas, expect traditional decorations, stunning gifts in their design shop and their annual performance of ‘A Christmas Carol’.
Christmas Walks:
Blow away some of the winter blues with a refreshing walk around our city. Hotel Isaacs is within easy walking distance of some of the city’s best trails. From the strenuous climb up Saint Patrick’s Hill to Bell’s Field to a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Lee, meandering into Fitzgerald’s Park and the Lee Fields beyond-there’s something for every age and fitness ability.
Greenes Restaurant and Cask Bar:
You don’t need to go too far to experience the Christmas magic! Our cosy boutique hotel becomes a Winter Wonderland of delight with stunning decorations, baubles and lights. The jewel in our crown is the huge Christmas tree in the middle of our waterfall at the end of our light bedecked courtyard. Whether you’re enjoying an evening meal in our newly revamped Greenes Restaurant or some Christmas cocktails from our brand new winter menu- prepare to be dazzled by the charm and beauty of our decadent surroundings.
