Top things to do on a weekend in Cork

Table of Contents

As the summer days slowly start to fade and signs of autumn begin to appear, you might be forgiven for feeling a little glum.  Where has the time gone?  One minute we were lounging on a beach (or at least in our dreams) and now, we’re already planning the return to school/college/work!

Feeling like you didn’t quite reach your peak this summer and fancy a last-minute/early autumn pick-me-up?  A weekend away in Cork’s Rebel City is always a good idea.  From a rejuvenating night’s sleep in our newly refurbished superior rooms to a mouth-watering meal in our freshly revamped Greenes Restaurant to a night-out at Ireland’s number one cocktail bar, Cask overlooking our very own waterfall- we can definitely think of worse ways to refresh and revitalise ahead of the season’s change.

Still in need of some gentle persuasion?  Here are just some of the things you can get up to on a weekend in Cork:

Stand-Up Paddle boarding

For those that love to get active, embrace the city’s best natural resource on the River Lee with an evening Stand-Up Paddle boarding adventure on this truly unique tour.  Taking 2 hours with 90 minutes on the water itself and covering a distance of 3km, there probably isn’t a more original way of learning about the city in a fun and safe way.

Nightlife

The prestigious winner of the International Purple Flag Award for its thriving night-life economy- prepare for a night you’ll remember when you hit the town in Cork. Whether it’s a romantic dinner for two followed by some cosy drinks or hitting the dance floor till the late hours- you’ll be spoiled for choice with the city’s plethora of pubs, bars and clubs.   No need for a taxi either as our boutique hotel is within a short walking distance of all the city’s best nightspots. Of course, we’d highly recommend our very own Cask Bar as a key start point for any night out!  Just four steps across our courtyard!

Shopping

From high street brands to quaint local independent stores to our famous English Market– Cork is a shopper’s paradise.  Whether you’re treating yourself or looking for the perfect gift for that special someone or simply having a leisurely browse, Hotel Isaacs is perfectly positioned for all your retail therapy needs!

Shows

With its selection of theatres and comedy clubs, you’ll be guaranteed a diverse range of entertainment to suit every taste.  From operas and West End musicals at the Cork Opera House to some of the best theatrical performances at the Everyman Palace Theatre (right across the street from our hotel) to some belly laughs at the City Limits Comedy Club (3 minutes from us too), Cork never fails to impress when it comes to its wide range of entertainment options.

University College Cork

Is a trip away really complete without embracing some sight-seeing?  A wander up to the picturesque grounds of University College Cork is worth a visit in its own right, however, whilst there, why not pop into the Honan Chapel and admire the famous Harry Clarke stained glass windows in this Hiberno-Romanesque Revival Church?  One of our personal favourites is the quirky Glucksman Art Gallery in the university lower grounds.  With free entry, it’s always worth checking out the latest eclectic exhibition on display.  The gift shop is also a treasure trove of unique gift ideas.

History

History buffs will lap up the exhibits at the Cork Public Museum in the grounds of the pretty Fitzgerald’s Park (free entry too), however, if you’re travelling with children or simply want a more immersive experience, look no further than the spooky Cork City Gaol.  Offering a combination of guided tours, audio tours and self-guided, travel back in time through the history of this 19th century prison!  Don’t forget to climb to the top floor for a dainty little radio museum too.

Nano Nagle Place

More than just a historical experience, people of all ages will love a visit to Nano Nagle Place.  Learn about the pioneering Lady of the Lamp who founded the Presentation Sisters School network in their interactive exhibit or why not simply grab a coffee and enjoy the tranquillity of their peaceful gardens.  The craft shop and Cork bookshop is also well-worth an explore.

Architecture

Let’s face it: Cork has a lot of churches!  The largest and most famous is the majestic St Finbarr’s Cathedral.  Dating back to 1870, the cathedral sits on the site of the former seventh century monastery.  Admire the height and grandeur before popping inside for a more in-depth tour.

Shandon Bells

Fancy seeing the city from a fresh perspective?  132 steps is all it takes to see the whole of our fine city from new heights!  Of course, it’s not just about the views!  This is the perfect chance to ring the famous Shandon Bells on your way up.   What better way to immerse yourself into the fabric of the city than producing music for the entire historic quarter to hear!  Reward yourself with some well-earned sweeties from the Shandon Sweet Shop on your way down!

Axe-Throwing

Engage in this weird and wonderful activity with an outing to Cork City Axe-Throwing!  A great way to release some pent up frustration or just to have a laugh with friends before a night-out-give it a try!
